What few know is that the football club almost disappeared again just three months after its foundation. In December 1945 virtually the entire first team split from VfL to form 1. FC Wolfsburg on their own. Coach Josef Meyer had to assemble a new side and did so successfully.
In their first year the rebuilt team won the 1. Kreisklasse title and promotion to the Bezirksliga. Further titles in the Amateur-Oberliga Niedersachsen-Ost followed from 1951 to 1954, until the young club finally beat Heider SV 2–1 in the last promotion match and reached the then top-flight Oberliga Nord.
