On May 26, 1938 Adolf Hitler laid the foundation stone for a Volkswagen factory that was originally meant to build the KdF-Wagen. To serve that purpose the city of Wolfsburg was founded and initially called “Stadt des Kraft-durch-Freude-Wagens bei Fallersleben.” The later VW Beetle thus got a home, and Wolfsburg, as it was called only after the war, acquired the stamp of a Nazi propaganda vehicle. In the same year a works sports community was founded inside the Volkswagen plant which played in the Gauliga Osthannover up to 1944 and can be seen as a kind of forerunner of VfL Wolfsburg.
The official foundation of VfL only came after the Second World War, and did so without glamour, in a barrack on Reislinger Straße.
